If you have ever heard the term Plagiocephaly, your first reaction may be, “Wow, that’s a mouthful!” While the name may be long, it and other similar terms such as brachycephaly and scaphocephaly simply refer to flattening and asymmetry that occur in an infant’s head. While this may be alarming for parents, the reality is these conditions are quite treatable.

While many cases of abnormal head shape will resolve naturally or through repositioning efforts, some may require orthotic treatment. Baby helmets, or cranial remolding orthoses, are designed to gently guide the growth of an infant’s head to improve symmetry and create a more normal head shape.
